Rongo University Leads the Way in Promoting Environmental Sustainability

In collaboration with various organizations, the Rongo University fraternity recently planted 1176 tree seedlings in Kanyasirega village to combat the grappling effects of climate change.

This significant event underscores the collective responsibility of stakeholders in environmental conservation.

The tree planting exercise brought together multiple organizations, including the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the County Government of Migori, and other learning institutions in the area.

This initiative demonstrated the collective responsibility all stakeholders share in conserving the environment. 

The university's Dean of INFOCOMS, Dr. Lameck Rono, emphasized the crucial role of each stakeholder in restoring the environment.

"We have come together for a common cause, to promote a sustainable future. Our actions serve as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in ensuring a clean and sustainable environment for future generations," he explained.

Rongo University's commitment to environmental conservation extends beyond tree planting. The university recently organized a cleanup exercise at Rongo Market, showcasing its commitment to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable environment. 

Dr. Rono also revealed the institution's plan to offer a financial boost to Rongo Town municipality to help implement similar activities.

"In the next financial year, Rongo University management is going to set aside some funds so that they work hand in hand with Rongo town municipality in matters of environmental restoration," said Dr. Rono.  

Among those in attendance was Hon. Caleb Opondi, the Migori County Executive Committee Member of Environment, Natural Resources, Climate Change, and Disaster Management, who urged the community members to align their environmental restoration activities with the urgent need for land restoration, reforestation, and climate resilience. 

This initiative by Rongo University and its partners highlights the importance of collective action in environmental conservation. It sets a precedent for other institutions and communities to follow in the fight against climate change.
