The Chair of the Finance Committee at the Council of Governors and Kakamega County boss, H.E. FCPA Fernandez Barasa, has called on the National Treasury to expedite the disbursement of funds to counties.

He explained that the delay in funding is hindering the smooth operation of county governments, with numerous pending projects that should have been completed by now.

Speaking at the Agricultural Showground during the pass-out ceremony for 200 newly recruited county marshals, who will bolster the County's revenue collection efforts, Governor Barasa stressed that the financial challenges faced by counties, due to the delayed release of funds from the central government, are straining their operations.

"I urge the Treasury to act promptly in releasing the funds to ensure the smooth execution of county projects aimed at improving livelihoods," the governor urged.

Additionally, Governor Barasa announced that the newly recruited marshals will help several towns, not only Mumias and Kakamega, but also smaller towns such as Koyonzo in Matungu, Sabatia in Butere, Khayega in Shinyalu, and Matete in Lugari, to meet their financial targets.

He congratulated the Office of Sports, Youth, and Gender, under the supervision of Minister Morphat Mandela, for overseeing the smooth execution of the recruitment exercise.

"I thank the entire team that oversaw the recruitment process and the training of this first cohort of County Marshals. I believe our County has the potential to generate Ksh 5 million annually, and I trust this goal will be achieved."

Governor Barasa also commended the marshals for completing their rigorous training.

"I am aware that you went through challenging training, and I trust that you will approach any duty assigned to you with dedication. Just as you were recruited from different parts of the County, you will be required to work in any assigned station. This ceremony marks your official entry into the youth service and women empowerment programs of Kakamega County," the governor concluded.
