Lusaka Accuses MPs of Hypocrisy on SHA/SHIF Medical Scheme
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has faulted Members of Parliament for what he termed as inconsistent criticism of the SHA/SHIF medical insurance scheme.
Speaking at Hosanna Celebration Church in Chwele, Lusaka called out MPs who have publicly disowned the program despite their role in approving it in Parliament.
“It is very hypocritical that the same leaders who approved the medical scheme are now claiming it is unworkable,” Lusaka said, emphasizing the need for accountability from legislators.
The governor expressed concern over misinformation being spread about the insurance scheme, stating that MPs should instead use their influence to educate the public about its benefits. He highlighted the importance of the program, particularly for low-income families facing high healthcare costs.
Lusaka urged residents to enroll in the scheme, adding that lawmakers should focus on amending any issues with the policy in Parliament rather than raising complaints in public forums.
He also raised concerns about the low uptake of the scheme in the Western region, contrasting it with higher registration rates in areas like Central Kenya. He attributed the discrepancy to a lack of awareness and called on local leaders to prioritize educating constituents on the program.
During his address, Lusaka reiterated his administration's commitment to development, citing projects such as the upgrading of Matope slums and the construction of a new bus park and market in Chwele.
The SHA/SHIF medical insurance scheme has been the subject of debate, with some questioning its effectiveness and implementation. However, Lusaka maintained that the program offers critical support for families unable to afford healthcare costs on their own.
