Lusaka Takes Bold Stand Against Substandard ECD Classrooms, Vows to Protect Children’s Futures
In a strong message to contractors, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has promised to withhold payment for shoddy work on Early Childhood Development (ECD) classrooms, following growing concerns over the poor conditions at some schools.
His remarks come as part of his ongoing efforts to ensure that young children in Bungoma County learn in safe and healthy environments.
During the launch of an ECD learning materials distribution program in Bumula, Lusaka didn’t hold back, expressing his frustration over the unsafe and unhygienic conditions many children are subjected to due to faulty classroom construction.
“I want to make it clear to contractors handling ECD projects that shoddy work will not be tolerated. For example, the contractor responsible for this school should not expect payment until they fix the issues. Our children deserve better,” Lusaka declared.
His comments come amid growing public concern over the state of several ECD classrooms in the county, which are not only substandard but are putting the safety of young learners at risk. Lusaka emphasized that his administration will not allow the future of children to be jeopardized by careless construction.
“My administration will not compromise the future of young children due to negligent construction. They deserve safe, conducive learning environments,” he said.
Lusaka also outlined steps to improve ECD education in the region. He revealed plans to recruit more teachers to meet the increasing demand for education, and promised to create a clear pathway for promotions for ECD educators.
While teacher recruitment had been delayed due to budgetary constraints, Lusaka assured residents that the process would soon begin.
“We’ve addressed the challenges, and recruitment will start soon,” he confirmed.
Additionally, Lusaka highlighted that the distribution of essential learning materials would continue across all wards in the county, ensuring that students have the necessary resources for a quality education.
"We are committed to creating the best learning environment for our children, and the distribution of learning materials is part of this effort," he concluded.
