Man Seeks Reconstructive Surgery After Self-Mutilation in Drug-Induced Episode
By Richard Milimu
Mental health and drug rehabilitation experts are raising alarms over a disturbing trend of self-harm among drug addicts, with some cases involving extreme mutilation.
In the latest incident in Isiolo, a man amputated his genitals while under the influence of multiple drugs. This marks the second such case reported in the region within a year.
The victim initially received treatment at Merti Sub-County Hospital before being transferred to Isiolo Referral Hospital. He was later moved to Meru Level Five Hospital, where he remained hospitalized for over a month.
Collins Shabaan, a psychiatrist at the rehabilitation center treating the victim, attributes these extreme acts of self-harm to excessive drug use and underlying mental health conditions.
"Most of these individuals suffer from drug-induced psychosis, which triggers hallucinations and a loss of self-awareness. Sadly, some engage in irreversible self-inflicted injuries," Shabaan explained.
Medical professionals stress the urgent need for public awareness and stricter regulations to control substances like miraa, cannabis, and illicit prescription drugs, which have been linked to worsening mental health crises.
Authorities and health officials in Isiolo are calling on the national government to expand mental health facilities and rehabilitation services to address the growing issue.
Experts warn that without proper intervention, more lives could be permanently altered by drug-induced psychotic episodes.
