The Chairperson of the Finance, Economic, and Planning Affairs Committee in the Council of Governors, Fernandes Barasa, has urged the national government not to reduce the allocation of funds provided to university students through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Governor Barasa emphasized the governors' unified appeal against any reductions in the financial allocations to universities by the Ministry of Education, highlighting the critical role of these funds in supporting students' education.

"We strongly oppose any reduction in the financial allocations that support our university students since education is a fundamental right, and it is our duty to ensure that every student has the resources they need to succeed. We urge the Ministry of Education to protect the future of our young people," he said.

Barasa also revealed that the County Government of Kakamega has allocated funds to cover the educational expenses of students living with disabilities.

"Our county is committed to inclusivity and ensuring that all students, regardless of their physical abilities, have access to quality education. That includes funding them," he added.

He spoke this in Kakamega town after participating in a cycling event organized by the KCA University fraternity led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Research, Innovation, and Outreach, Professor Vincent Onywera.

Prof. Onywera revealed that the ongoing cycling exercise across over 10 counties in Kenya aimed to raise funds for educating students from underprivileged backgrounds.

"We are committed to ensuring that our students in the university don't drop out of school due to lack of school fees but are able to pursue their ambitions with zeal," he said.

He further stated that the cycling initiative also aimed at creating public awareness of the importance of road safety and healthy living.

"Off late, we have seen an increase in road accidents that have claimed many lives due to negligence. We are here to educate the public on the importance of observing road laws and maintaining physical fitness. It is a holistic approach to building a healthier, more informed society."
