Sugarcane farmers in Kakamega County have reason to rejoice as Mumias Sugar Company sets the price for a tonne of sugarcane at 6,050, ensuring a prompt payment within seven days.

Operations and Administration Manager, Stephene Kihumba, encourages farmers to cultivate large quantities of sugarcane and only harvest mature cane, aged 16 months, for optimal content.

Kihumba assures farmers that the company will pay them weekly without delays, emphasizing Mumias Sugar Company as a reliable investment for sugarcane farming.

The Agricultural and Food Authority (AFA) has instructed the company to crush 2,500 tons of sugarcane daily for the next two months, with a subsequent evaluation to determine further crushing capacity.

According to Kihumba, Mumias Sugar Company can potentially crush 8,400 tons of sugarcane daily once fully operational.

The company, situated in the Lower Kakamega region with Kibos Sugar Company and Olepito, aims to support local farmers and eliminate cane transfers to other regions.

With 1,400 hectares already planted on the company's 3,400-hectare nucleus land, Kihumba plans to cover the remaining area next year, emphasizing the availability of sufficient seed cane.

Mumias Sugar Company commenced operations on December 1, 2023, and will release sugar to the market in two weeks after compliance tests by agencies such as the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

The company has rehired 787 former employees, with additional staff expected in the Sugar Packing area, and further engagement of former employees on a need basis, anticipating opportunities in the Cogen and Ethanol plant.
