On Sunday, November 24, 2024, Jairus Omuteche, a senior lecturer at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), left his home in Ebukhubi Village, Vihiga County, to visit his farm near River Jordan.

He intended to collect sticks for his cowshed but never returned home, prompting a frantic search by his family and colleagues.

Three days later, on Tuesday, November 26, his body was discovered in the Jordan River, about 15 kilometers from his home. The discovery has raised questions as authorities launched investigations to determine the cause of his death.

Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed that investigations are underway to establish whether Dr. Omuteche’s death was accidental or involved foul play.

“This is a very tragic incident,” Macharia said in a statement. “We are working closely with local authorities to uncover the facts and ensure that the investigation is thorough and transparent.”

While initial indications suggest drowning, authorities are not ruling out other possibilities, including murder. Some reports allege that Dr. Omuteche’s body may have been dumped in the river, but no official confirmation has been made.

Dr. Omuteche’s family remains devastated by the loss. His wife, who reported him missing on Sunday evening, described him as a dedicated family man with no known enemies.

“He was a kind and humble person. We just want to know what happened,” said a close family member.

Colleagues at MMUST have expressed sorrow, describing Dr. Omuteche as a dedicated educator and mentor.

Known for his expertise in Black Diasporic Literature, Popular Culture, and Postcolonial Studies, he had over 15 years of teaching and research experience.

Dr. Omuteche’s body has been moved to Itando Mission Hospital, where a postmortem examination is expected to provide critical clues about his death.

Local authorities are urging residents to come forward with any information about his last known movements.

The death of Dr. Omuteche has left a void in his family, the university, and the local community as they await answers about what transpired during his final hours.
