Bukhaywa Secondary School in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, now has a new dormitory to accommodate its female students. The facility, funded by the Kenya Power and Lighting Foundation, was built at a cost of Ksh. 5 million and designed to house 200 students.

The joy was evident at the official handover ceremony, as many of these girls face long, hazardous journeys to school every day, a situation linked to risks such as defilement, teen pregnancies, and poor performance as expressed by Kakamega County Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda.

"These girls were walking long distances, facing dangers every day. However, with the dormitory in existence, that is over," Muhanda explained.

Muhanda revealed that she visited the donor's offices to seek support in constructing the structure, to improve the lives of the female students in the school. "I am very delighted that the girls now have a haven away from home. This dormitory will make a huge difference. The girls will no longer have to waste precious time traveling, and I'm optimistic that their academic performance will improve significantly," Muhanda said.

Bukhaywa Secondary School Principal Michael Amukowa, who also serves as KESSHA chairperson, highlighted the significance of the dormitory for a school where many students come from underprivileged backgrounds.

He also called on the Ministry of Education to expedite capitation funds, which are critical for the school's ongoing operations.

"We are facing significant financial constraints, and timely disbursement of these funds is essential," Amukowa explained.

KPCL Foundation Manager Rachael Gathoni confirmed that the dormitory meets government safety regulations, including doors that can be opened from the inside to ensure student safety in emergencies.

She emphasized the company's commitment to changing the community through corporate social responsibility.

"We believe in investing in the future of these young people and the community at large."

The new dormitory represents more than just bricks and mortar; it is a symbol of hope and opportunity for the female students of Bukhaywa Secondary School. The school now looks forward to further development, particularly the construction of a perimeter wall to enhance security and provide peace of mind for the students and their families.
