Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation to Build Ksh 50 Million Maternal and Child Health Complex in Busia

For mothers and children in Matayos Sub-County, Busia County, a brighter future is on the horizon. The Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation has officially launched the construction of a state-of-the-art Integrated Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (IMNCH) complex at Nasewa Health Center.
The Ksh 50 million project, part of the Afya Uzazi Salama program, aims to transform maternal and child healthcare in the region.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Busia County Deputy Governor Arthur Odera hailed the collaboration between the county government and Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation as a game-changer for the community.
“This project will play a pivotal role in ensuring that no woman faces challenges during delivery and that every mother and child receives the care they need,” Odera said.
He also highlighted the financial relief the facility would bring to families burdened by high medical expenses.
The deputy governor urged residents to enroll in the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme to cushion themselves against the financial strain of hospital bills.
“Every year, 10 percent of our population is pushed into poverty due to medical expenses. Affordable healthcare is no longer optional – it’s a necessity,” he emphasized.
The new IMNCH complex will feature a 12-bed capacity ward, a specialized newborn unit with pre-term care, and a doctors’ rest area to support medical professionals.
Designed to provide a comprehensive healthcare experience, the facility is expected to significantly improve maternal and child health outcomes for the local population.
Joseph Ogutu, Chairman of the Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the county government for supporting the initiative.
“The Afya Uzazi Salama program is part of our commitment to ensuring no woman faces complications during delivery. This is about saving lives and improving the well-being of our communities,” Ogutu said.
He added that the Safaricom Foundation has spearheaded similar projects in other regions, such as Samburu, where maternal mortality remains a major challenge.
The IMNCH complex will be equipped with cutting-edge medical equipment, including a generator to guarantee uninterrupted power supply, ensuring high-quality care for mothers and their newborns.
As construction gets underway, the Nasewa Health Center is set to become a beacon of hope for families in Matayos Sub-County, offering a safer and brighter start for mothers and children alike.
