Turkana: County Launches Relief Food Distribution in Suguta Sub-County Amid Hunger Crisis

The Turkana County Government has launched a relief food distribution exercise to assist vulnerable communities in Suguta Sub-County, one of the most remote and insecure regions in the county. 

This initiative aims to provide crucial support to residents facing hunger due to the adverse effects of climate change, which continues to threaten food security across the region.

Suguta, a newly established sub-county carved from Turkana East, has been struggling with recurrent food shortages driven by harsh climatic conditions and security challenges.

David Maraka, Chief Officer for Administration and Disaster Management, confirmed that 150 bags of relief food would be distributed to both local communities and schools. 

The exercise targets areas including Napeitom, Ngilukia, Kamuge, Silale, Kangayama, Nadome, Lomelo, Kapetasekon, and Emeyan. Schools such as Kapedo Mixed Primary and Kapedo Girls School are also included in the distribution.

Maraka added that the initiative extends beyond Turkana, with members from neighboring counties, including Baringo, also benefiting from the food distribution. 

"This is part of a strategic plan to foster cross-border solidarity and collaboratively address hunger," he said during the distribution event at Kapedo.

He emphasized that the exercise demonstrates the County Government's commitment to supporting all its populations, particularly those in remote and hard-to-reach areas.

The distribution was carried out in collaboration with the office of the area Member of Parliament, ensuring inclusivity in targeting the most affected populations. 

The event was attended by Deputy County Commissioner of Kapedo, Franklin Okuta, Area Police Commandant William Oyugi, and Sub-County Administrator Lomeyen Ewoi.
