A somber mood has engulfed the residents of Isulu village in Ikolomani, Kakamega County, following the deaths of three motorcycle riders who were involved in a road accident that occurred at Isulu center along the busy Musoli-Sigalagala road while escorting a body in a funeral convoy.
According to eyewitnesses, there were two families, each in a convoy escorting the remains of their loved ones home. While traveling in the first convoy heading to Musoli, one of the deceased bodaboda riders hit a woman pedestrian amid the confusion. While trying to escape, he decided to turn the motorcycle towards the second convoy, which was heading in the same direction as the first. Unfortunately, the motorcycle that was carrying two other riders collided with an incoming vehicle. The trio were reported to have died on the spot.
"The one driving might have been under the influence of drugs; he was overspeeding while intertwining on both sides of the road. Upon reaching Isulu center, he crashed into a car, claiming his life and those of the two people he was carrying," said Timothy Mukoto.
The incident was confirmed by Masai Makau, the Kakamega South OCPD, who urged those who are fond of escorting bodies from the morgue to observe traffic rules as a measure of avoiding such incidents.
"Most of these convoys from the mortuary are usually chaotic. It's better you wait for the body at home if you know you can't observe the road safety rules. This will reduce such incidences," he said.
The pedestrian woman who was hit by the motorcycle riders before the accident happened was rushed to Shibwe Hospital, where she is recuperating, while the deceased were taken to Kakamega Funeral Home, awaiting autopsy.
